Notes About :Alstroemeria

ALSTROEMERIA PERUVIAN LILY. All are outstanding cut flowers and like a well drained, fertile soil. Mulching, especially the first winter, can make them hardy in colder zones than stated. Hint for Alstroe fanatics: Check out Bomerea salsilla, the climbing Alstroemeria.
PLEASE read the following important information about growing and shipping Alstroemerias, which is very important to USDA hardiness zones 7 and colder, less so for zone 8 and less still for zone 9. As you may have noticed, Alstroemerias, especially tall ones, are hard to come by. The following will explain some of that.

GUARANTEE/COLD HARDINESS: The USDA hardiness zones indicated are to be used as a guide only to determine which are hardier than others, which is a guess at best. As with any plant, cold hardiness depends on many more factors than just average minimum winter temperatures: Soil type, fertility, microclimate, time of planting, abnormal weather patterns etc. This is truer to Alstroemerias than with most other perennials and thus we cannot guarantee their winter survival in your area, regardless of your zone. If you are not sure if they’ll grow in your area, try just a few for starters or ask/join a local garden club. Alternatively, you can grow them in pots and winter over in a cold but frost free room – the cooler the better.
SHIPPING/TIMING: The best time to plant and ship Alstroemerias is as early in spring as possible. This way the plants have all season to get established and also ship much better instead later in the season when they are up to 3 feet tall. Into the first week of April we can ship them without top growth, in which state they’ll travel better than with top growth and shipping cost may be reduced (explained later). Later in the season Alstroemerias don’t like to be trimmed down and have to be shipped with tops. This is fairly easy for the remainder of April. Later, May thru mid June they get long, tender stems, up to 2 feet and more, and since they are in 4” pots, sometimes may have only 2-3 stems. Mid June thru mid July we don’t recommend shipping them at all, but can do so at your own risk. The second best time to plant and ship is mid July thru August, as they again can be shipped without tops. But keep in mind that this could affect the cold hardness in colder zones.
SHIPPING COSTS: Mid July thru mid April we ship them without top growth and can fit 6 plants into a medium flat rate box. If the shopping cart charges $18.00 and over, we'll reimburse for amounts over $16.00. 9 plants can fit into a large flat rate box, then we'll reimburse shipping if you get charged $23.00 and over for the amount going over $21.00. This, however, only works if you can receive US Mail and choose them as carrier. Mid April thru mid July we don't recommend it as this is the main growth and blooming season for them.

This is currently the most outstanding selection we offer in the purple color range. The flowers are medium-large (2.5"), dark lavender with a white zone but no yellow, which intensifies the purple experience. Unfortunately for everyone involved, this is the slowest to propagate, yielding only a few a year despite keeping about 30 stock plants.

The whitest thus far, just a little tinted with pink and yellow, besides the obligatory burgundy dashes. Often extremes like being the whitest make selections weak or a fussy grower; not 'Casablanca'! A strong grower (but not spreading) and heavy bloomer on sturdy stems.

The name made us suspicious first, not knowing if "Dusty" is a code name for dirty. We were very much pleased to see the first bloom open in what we would call antique rose. The bloom size is above average and the vigor of the plant just right.

The variegated form of 'Sweet Laura', from whom it inherited its fragrance and dark gold blooms, opening from a maroon bud. The creamy yellow edged leaves stay until frost or stay evergreen in milder zones. One of the hardiest Alstroemerias.

For many years, close to 10 actually, we had this color in our collection but the plants wouldn't produce hardly any offsets. Finally, after growing and trying many seedlings, we came up with this one that divides in an acceptable manner.

Deepest purple we've seen in Alstroemerias, set off by a large creamy-white zone. After surviving the 7deg. F. December 2009 unscathed without protection, the plant looked like a million bucks June through mid August 2010.

Purple is one of the most sought-after colors in Alstroes and we've been growing on lots of seedlings for new selections. Out of hundreds we kept about a dozen and 2-3 are very promising. The rest are still purple and we thought we would share some of those at a special price. Although we can't guarantee that all will be purple, the nice thing about seedlings is that you'll get some variety.

Certain gold and orange colored Peruvian Lilies (Alstroemerias aurea) gave them a bad name because they can take over your yard and neighborhood. To the rescue comes 'Sussex Gold', which, like all other varieties we offer, doesn't "run" and this one doesn't even seed. The flowers are medium-large (2.5"), open with a light bronze/burnt orange tinge but age to deep, pure gold. You can bank on this one!

A truly amazing variety that received an award for Garden Merit in England. The flowers are among the largest (3"+), a soft mid-yellow with pink to purple blotches - which are more or less pronounced, depending on conditions - toward the outside of the petals. We put it under USDA zone 7, but feel it shouldn't be less hardy than others.
