The Lastest Dirt

Dear fellow gardeners,

This year ended with a trip to Switzerland (mainly), Germany and Austria . A great time to see good old friends, the good old home country, and yes, the Matterhorn . Since I’m a tourist now I can go and see that too.

Of course you know I wouldn’t go “just” for that. As it happened, I “ran” into great plants, old tested Europe gems and new ones (we’ll have to test both of them here). Foremost, a bunch of Gentians; trumpet and Chinese types, 19 in all. Speaking of Matterhorn, I also “dug up” Leontopodium alpinum ‘Matterhorn; a promising long leaved L.alpinum selection. Then there are those Auriculas (Primula auricula Hybrids), a plant group that’s awakening from its “Sleeping Beauty” slumber. In the 1800s, over 1000 varieties were available. Well, I brought just 13 more but that’s a start. On the other hand, Sempervivum (Hens & Chicks) are already very popular. For that crowd I brought
22 new varieties from Germany.

For 2008 we added some 70 different perennials to our catalog; more will be added to our website throughout the year. To view those, simply click on the “web only” button; there are also a bunch of plants available only on the web.

Despite the ongoing arumphobia by some people, spreading the rumor they are spreading, we added several species and varieties to the list. Again, they are strictly clumping; this is a simple botanical fact. The only way they can spread is when the corms are dug up and distributed through the garden. By seed it is possible but not to a great extent. Anyway, I wouldn’t want to garden without them with that unmatched winter foliage.

In the Geranium department we finally got around to make Geranium pratense ssp. stewartianum ‘Elizabeth Yeo’ available. Its bright, dark pink is very unusual for that species.

You think Glads are tacky? How about Gladiolus commumis, found wild growing in Switzerland, growing to 2 feet tall with magenta-purple flowers.

The much sought-after Paeonia mlokosewitschii is finally available; the plants are 3 year old.  The last plant I want to point out is Silene dioica ‘Flore Plena’, an old garden plant from back who knows when. The huge, double bright pink flowers are simply stunning and last over a week in the vase.

We wish you all a year that’s full of tranquil moments in your garden.

Urs and family
