About us

We are a small family run mail-order nursery located in the heart of the Willamette Valley. (Canby, Oregon) In 1998 we moved over to America from Switzerland, with a suitcase of perennials, and started our business. We maintain good connections with our nursery friends in Switzerland and Germany, and periodically import plants from Europe. Edelweiss Perennials specializes in several different plant groups, but our main aim is to grow good garden plants. This sounds a bit simple, but we think it's important that a plant is not just new or very unusual; it also has to perform in gardens without daily pampering and has to look good more than just a few weeks out of the year. Having said all that, we do like extraordinary plants, given they fall into the criteria just explained. This is not to say that all our plants are “foolproof”; some of them have to be placed carefully to meet their growing requirements.

Urs has been working in the nursery business since he was 15 years old, when he started his apprenticeship in Switzerland. His first job was at Frei Nursery in Wildensbuch, home of the Max Frei Geranium. He spent most of his years as a horticulturalist in Switzerland managing the perennial department for Friedrich Nursery in Unterstammheim, Switzerland, where he was responsible for three and a half thousand varieties of perennials and gained a wealth of knowledge and practical experience.
