About Daphne

An amazing bunch of plants, foremost renown for their fragrance. But they are also very showy and quite tough - especially drought tolerant - in the right conditions. Most of them take full sun and are cold hardy to USDA zone 5. Good drainage is essential! If this is difficult to achive, like because of a high water table as is the case on our property, simply "go up" and plant on berms. The soil can and should be on the heavy side. It has been our experinence that Daphne prefer being planted in the ground outside. For us, some varieties go downhill in pots and in potting soil after 18 months. Please note that the plants you'll receive can be small for two main reasons: Most of our offerings are dwarfs or even "super dwarfs", and, as mentioned earlier, Daphne can be tricky in pots and potting media. That's why we like to get them out as long as they "have the momentum". Also, they put on the most growth in spring; if we ship them in March, they haven't put on that growth yet like they would have by mid May.
